The European Commission's WiFi4EU initiative promotes free Wi-Fi connectivity in public spaces across Europe, including parks, squares, public buildings, libraries, health centres, and museums. From 2018 to 2021, the EU allocated approximately €120 million to local governments to support this effort. Dublin City Council received the maximum grant of €60,000, which was matched by the Department of Rural and Community Development, doubling the investment in the city's public WiFi networks. In collaboration with Virgin Media, over 33 WiFi hotspots were installed, with the public involved in selecting locations.
